At RETS, we have many candidates interviewing on a weekly basis. We prep, provide guidance and sometimes hear some interesting feedback. As we begin to close out ’25, we want to share a reminder. Whether you’re a Boomer, X, Z or Millennial, we can all benefit from some reminders.
In commercial real estate, relationships and first impressions go hand in hand, and that starts with how you present yourself, even before you speak. Whether you’re meeting on Zoom or in person, your appearance communicates professionalism, confidence, and respect for the opportunity.
Recently, during a round of interviews, a few moments stood out for the wrong reasons. One talented candidate logged on with unbrushed hair, another wore a sleeveless top better suited for brunch than business, and one young man joined in a loud Hawaiian shirt that said “vacation” more than “valuation.” All three were bright, capable people, but their attire distracted from their message.
Gen Z brings energy, curiosity, and digital savvy to the CRE industry, qualities every employer values. But in a business built on trust, deals, and presentation, how you show up visually matters. A polished look tells a client or future employer that you’re ready to represent their brand and handle multimillion-dollar assets with care.
You don’t need to look corporate stiff in a blue suit, white shirt, black wingtips and a dark tie (that’s for the Boomers), just intentional. For Zoom, test your camera, choose a simple background, and wear something professional (a collared shirt, blouse, or blazer works wonders). For in-person interviews, lean classic over casual: pressed clothes, neat hair, and closed-toe shoes.
The takeaway? Dress like you already have the job you want. In CRE, that extra bit of polish can set you apart before you’ve even said hello.
